Twenty-six years ago, I was wrapping up my in-patient stint at Tampa General Rehab Center after breaking my neck and sustaining a spinal cord injury (SCI) while surfing almost 6 months earlier. The TGRC staff were all great, but 4 women there had the biggest impact on me finding my way with my new normal, an impact that continues to affect me today: PTs Nan, Carol, Lori, and my OT Susan.

I had the great pleasure of spending time with Lori and her guy Chris today; they helped me get my new wheelchair ordered, bought me dinner, and once again offered encouragement, moral support, and a little bit of Lori’s tough love.

Never underestimate the impact you can have on someone’s life, sometimes with a simple expression of encouragement and a belief in possibilities. My success is their success. I can never thank them enough.
