Twenty-six years ago, I was wrapping up my in-patient stint at Tampa General Rehab Center after breaking my neck and sustaining a spinal cord injury (SCI) while surfing almost 6 months earlier. The TGRC staff were all great, but four women there had the biggest impact on me finding my way with my new normal, an impact that continues to affect me today: PTs Nan, Carol, Lori, and my OT Susan.

I had the great pleasure of spending time with Lori and her guy Chris today; they helped me get my new wheelchair ordered, bought me dinner, and once again offered encouragement, moral support, and a little bit of Lori’s tough love.

Never underestimate the impact you can have on someone’s life, sometimes with a simple expression of encouragement and a belief in possibilities. My success is their success. I can never thank them enough.
